Re-Opening Beauvais
The project is based on a study of the existing environment in order to re-appropriate the historic place. As part of Edouard Cabay's Re- atelier in Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture, the aim is to revisit historical architecture’s artifacts and thrust into a new existence. The atelier’s approach is based on exploration and research into the existing environment, using mapped, parametric.
The site chosen is the cathedral of Beauvais, a Romanesque church whose construction began in 1225, and continues to this day. Extrapolating from this idea of museification, we decided,Michelle Ramirez and I, to create a viewing pathway, a museum in its own right, which would welcome visitors while perpetuating the use of worship. Having been struck by the unique quality of light that floods the nave, we decided to study light using photography. By the use of a camera obscura, we mapped the incoming light at various points to determine its impact on the existing structure, the variation in luminosity at various points and to determine sectors of light in the cathedral.
